Bawumia’s own words were used against him in the 2024 elections – Ken Agyapong

NewsBawumia's own words were used against him in the 2024 elections - Ken Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong, the former member of parliament for Assin Central and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s own words were used against him in the party’s 2024 election defeat.

Kennedy Agyapong refuted claims that the NDC’s victory was due to his comments.

According to Kennedy Agyapong, the suggestion that his comments were used as ads, which contributed to the NPP defeat, is not valid.

He noted that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s own pronouncements in the past and in government were used against in.

Speaking on Pan African Television, Kennedy Agyapong stated, “You saw the former Chief Justice picketing. So during my campaign, I told them that anybody in that administration lost in 2022 because Ghanaians had decided they would get rid of us, and they used that against me, that I caused their defeat. Some candidates go around and say because of him, we lost the election”.

He added, “Did I say that when the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you? The lady quoted it at the Agric Bank. Did I say that I am going to lock the dollar? It is under lock and key, and I’ve given the key to the police, whatever?

You think I am the only smartest person in the country that did not listen or hear? When they are losing their business and take a decision, now you use it against me that I caused the defeat? Today is an opportunity for me to explain this.

Look at the NDC advert, the number of adverts, what Bawumia said that they used against him and compare to the number of adverts they said I have said that. They have never been fair, but I leave it to God”.

Kennedy Agyapong added, “They’ve never been fair. I leave it to God. All the things I said were a caution to them; if they had listened to me, there wouldn’t have been this humiliating defeat ever, but they didn’t listen because the whole party machinery was against Kennedy Agyapong”.

In the same interview, Mr Agyapong further noted that 60 per cent of Ghana’s infrastructure was built by Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The former lawmaker highlighted that the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in just 9 years, had done what no president has been able to match in Ghana’s political history.

Speaking on Talk Time with Kwesi Pratt on Pan African TV on August 2, 2025, Kennedy Agyapong stated, “You see, I have role models and these role models are pragmatists. When you look at the infrastructural framework of this country, nearly 60% of them were done by President Kwame Nkrumah in just 9 years of his rule.

That is from 1957 to 1966, and up to now, we have not been able to match what he did. I go around the country and I see the things he achieved, so he is my role model. If there’s a president whose record I want to beat, it’s Dr Kwame Nkrumah”.

Kennedy Agyapong further claimed he will be able to beat the late former president Kwame Nkrumah’s records if the Ghanaian’s gave him 8 years to rule the country.

“When you give me 8 years, I will beat his record,” the politician added.

Kennedy Agyapong further condemned the sloganeering approach by succeeding governments, which has not yielded any results for Ghana.

He added, “Enough is enough of the theories. We have been propounding theories that we’re going to do this, we’re going to do that, and I feel that first, we’re not on top of the game, because we’re not brilliant on the basics”.

Meanwhile, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the former Chief Executive of the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP), has called on the Kennedy Agyapong team to stop labelling Dr Mahamamudu Bawumia as the cause of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 election.

According to Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, Kennedy Agyapong has always insisted that the NPP lost the 2024 election in 2022 due to the economic crisis Ghanaians faced.

In a post via social media, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah stated, “If Hon Ken admits we lost the election in 2022, then it simply means that even if he had won the primaries, we would have still lost.”

“His People should stop blaming Dr Bawumia for our defeat then. We lost the election through our collective actions, not because of our candidate”, he added.

Kofi Ofosu Nkansah further recounted that Kennedy Agyapong cannot shirk himself from the NPP’s defeat as he was a Board Chairman of one of Ghana’s biggest state institutions.

He highlighted, “Ken supporters should stop saying their candidate wasn’t part of the Government. He was the Board Chairman of one of the biggest state institutions, Ghana Gas. His wife was also a big Board Chair.
