“We can now appreciate why we couldn’t have put Akufo-Addo in just any jet” – Ex-NPP MP

News“We can now appreciate why we couldn’t have put Akufo-Addo in just any jet” – Ex-NPP MP

Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, a former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, has waded into the military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

According to him, the military helicopter crash may perhaps help Ghanaians to appreciate why the NPP in office could not have former President Akufo-Addo in any jet.

Speaking on GH ONE TV, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi is quoted to have stated, “Perhaps we can now appreciate why we couldn’t have put former President Akufo-Addo in just any jet”.

The now Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs in opposition, exposed then-President Akufo-Addo’s use of private jets.

He exposed former President Akufo-Addo’s $20,000-an-hour luxury jet travels, which he revealed as a wasteful expense.

The exposé pressured Akufo-Addo to revert to using Ghana’s presidential jet, saving millions of dollars in taxpayer funds.

Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi’s comments come following the tragic helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, which claimed the lives of Dr Omane Boamah and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The helicopter was carrying eight individuals, including three crew members and five passengers, among them the ministers, a presidential staffer identified as Samuel Sarpong, and the ministers’ security detail.

Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Aboagye, a former Parliamentary Candidate, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of NDC, have all been confirmed dead.

The crew members are Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

According to initial reports, the high-ranking government officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft went off radar.

The cause of the crash is not yet known, and officials have yet to release full details.

In a brief statement, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) stated that a helicopter, identified as a Z-9, had reportedly gone off the radar after taking off on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The aircraft was headed to Obuasi when contact was lost.

Meanwhile, the Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, before his passing, revealed Ghana’s presidential jet is sick and heavily corroded.

According to the Defence Minister, the Presidential jet is in France due to serious technical faults.

Omane Boamah further revealed that the return date for the Presidential jet keeps changing.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 21, Dr Omane Boamah stated, “It is sad to note that for some time now, whenever the president’s jet goes for either maintenance or overhaul, the date that is scheduled for it to return to Ghana keeps changing”.

“They have extended it to two months before, and later two and a half. In this case, as we speak, the aircraft is still not in.”

“We are hoping that the date that has been given will see the Falcon in Ghana,” he said.

“The truth is that the presidential jet is heavily corroded… However, that does not in any way justify hiring or renting luxurious aircraft persistently for presidential use,” he asserted.
