Kofi Kapito, the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), has fired shots at the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George.
According to Kofi Kapito, Sam George promised the Ghanaian people a reduction in DStv prices but did a 419.
Kofi Kapito argued that he gets upset when the media keeps saying the DSTV deal is unprecedented.
He emphasised that there is nothing unprecedented about what Sam George did, as DSTV does promotions all the time.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV, Kofi Kapito fumed, “You know, I get upset when I hear the media saying this is unprecedented. What is unprecedented about what he did? This guy has done us 419”
“The minister promised a reduction in cost and not an increase in bouquet channels. DSTV does promotions all the time, buy one, get one free, that is not a fight for consumers. He has shot himself in the foot”, Kapito said.
He added, “This is not permanent. So, is that what we bargained for?”
Kofi Kapito continued, “The minister has shot his foot. I mean, you know, it doesn’t make any sense because when you are too exuberant, as Minister Sam George. This is what happens to you.
It is the second time that he’s telling us this thing. You remember when the data promises, the same thing. Then he told us that, oh, he’s bargaining for more data for us.
This crocro the john thing that he does is you stop, and he talks too much. He’s not. He’s not the only king in Ghana”.
“If we had threatened a boycott, DSTV would have listened. The minister should have been the last person to intervene”, he suggested.
Also, Bernard Mornah, the former National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has explained how Sam Nartey George failed to achieve a reduction in the DStv subscription fee.
According to Bernard Mornah, Sam George promised Ghanaians a reduction in DStv prices and not an increase in packages.
Speaking on the CTV panel discussion, Bernard Mornah explained, “That is not what Sam George promised us; that is not what the minister promised us. If you have failed, tell the people of Ghana I did not succeed. I hit a rock for us all to admit it was something that you wanted to do, but could not do.
But don’t turn around and come and tell us you have achieved more than you wanted to achieve. When that happens, the deception becomes too much”.
He continued, “Because I am seeking a reduction in the prices that I am paying, which did not happen, I was not seeking an increase in the packages; that is not what everyone was complaining about. I am very disappointed.
You are doing something for all Ghanaians, and you go and don’t succeed, you can say that ‘countrymen and women, what I wanted to achieve I could not achieve’. But to come and tell us you did not achieve what you wanted, but what you wanted was less than what you have succeeded in, is spite in our face”.
Additionally, Kamal-Deen Abdulai, the Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has quizzed Sam George on whether more channels mean the reduction he promised Ghanaians.
According to Kamal-Deen Abdulai, Sam George’s approach to the DStv subscription fees saga was wrong.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Kamal-Deen Abdulai stated, “To my brother Sam George, talk is cheap. You can do all the talking and raise your muscles, but trust that people stand by the law. When investors come into this country, they look for fine lawyers and engage them.
“They also engage tax experts and marketing experts. That is a serious investor’s approach. So, when you come up with threats, they don’t care. They will also go and consult their people. The whole thing then becomes like a fight,” he added.
He added, “At least he was lucky because the public was with him. All he needed to do was to water the grounds enough with the public and find a way of getting the public to issue statements to DStv.
“When they see that, they will know the public is serious. But he didn’t do that. Rather, he came out with threats, only for him to come at the last minute to announce that subscribers are going to enjoy more channels. Does more channel mean reduction?” he questioned.
