Kofi Adams, Ghana’s minister for Sports and Recreation, has said he is not impressed with the performance of Black Stars coach Otto Addo.
The Sports Minister asserted that if he says he is impressed with the performance of Otto Addo, then he does not know his work.
According to Kofi Adams, he is dissatisfied with Ghana’s inconsistent displays in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Kofi Adams stated, “Very soon, AFCON is going to start in Morocco. Are we going to be part of it? No, we will watch on TV. We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that, as far as our group is concerned, nobody can overtake us”.
“If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. I am not. There is a lot of room for improvement. Even when you meet the coach himself, he admits that he got things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is: for how long will you continue to take blame for wrong decisions?” he asked.
Kofi Adams, in the same interview, noted that Sports can deliver more with proper investment.
He highlighted that sports, when properly managed, could deliver economic and social benefits that few other sectors can provide.
He argued that Morocco and South Africa are two African nations reaping major benefits from prioritising sports.
Kofi Adams explained, “Sports is a very promising sector. If handled and done well, it will be a huge lift for our country. Around the world, many countries have chosen to invest heavily in sports because it has achieved results that many other initiatives could not”.
“One thing about sports is that we are dealing with talent. So long as we continue to procreate, there will always be people with unique talents. That’s why investment in sports is never wrong. It is one sector that has shown consistent growth. While the returns may not come immediately, sports take a lot of stress off the government and the population,” he added.
The Sports Minister furher revealed plans for a 50,000-capacity stadium at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
According to him, the Mahama government plans to turn the facility into a modern sports city of international standards.
He explained, “We are looking to have a new stadium of that size around our Borteyman Sports Complex. Because we want to elevate that whole space into a sports city or village so that international clubs can come and camp and train there.
“With such a facility, we will also add accommodation. When this is done, in the future, you will not see accommodation for the Black Stars on the national budget. But we are working on a PPP arrangement,” he explained.
Kofi Adams added, “We want to do a minimum of 50,000 in the Borteyman space, and we should be able to finish it before 2028,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars of Ghana kept Ghanaian dreams of going to the World Cup alive after they recorded a crucial 1-0 win over Mali in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Jordan Ayew assisted Alexander Djiku, who tapped the ball into the net at the far post from a corner kick.
The Blackstars’ defence of Djiku, Salisu, and Yirenkyi played key roles by keeping Mali’s attacks at bay.
The 1-0 win puts the Black Stars in pole position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup with two games to go.
Ghana lead the group after eight matches with 19 points, Madagascar are second with 16 points, Comoros are third with 15 points, while Mali lie fourth with 12 points.
The Black Stars will play their last two games in October 2025, against the Central African Republic (CAR) and Comoros.
Black Stars will have to gain a maximum of 4 points from their two remaining games to seal qualification for the global showpiece in the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026.
