Mahama is a role model for future African leaders – Sam Jonah

NewsMahama is a role model for future African leaders - Sam Jonah

Renowned businessman and Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, Sir Sam Jonah, has applauded President John Dramani Mahama over his commitment to Ghana’s democratic principles and constitutionalism.

Sir Sam Jonah described John Mahama’s bold declaration not to contest for a third term as a beacon of hope for the African continent.

According to him, President Mahama is a role model for future African leaders.

In a post on social media on Friday, August 2025, Sir Sam Jonah wrote, “John Mahama’s leadership embodies the values of democracy and integrity. Despite calls to amend the constitution for personal gain, he remains committed to upholding the rule of law and respecting the limits of his mandate. His humility, determination, and genuine commitment to leaving a lasting legacy are traits that set him apart as a leader,”

He further described Mahama as “a role model for future African leaders,” adding that the president’s “dedication to democratic principles and constitutionalism is a beacon of hope for our continent. Let’s celebrate his leadership and vision!”

His comments come on the heels of President Mahama’s refusal to entertain notions of amending the constitution for a third term.

President John Dramani Mahama has boldly declared he will not be a candidate in Ghana’s next elections in 2028.

According to John Mahama, stepping aside in 2028 would give him the moral authority to hold the line when it comes to Ghana’s fiscal discipline in an election year.

President Mahama, during a bilateral discussion with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, criticised the practice of incumbent governments by-passing fiscal safeguards to curry favour with voters, a cycle he will end.

“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he said.

John Mahama’s declaration finally put an end to the growing speculation that he may seek another term in 2028.

In addition, Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, has also praised President John Mahama with a red salute.

In a post on X, Kwesi Pratt wrote, “I give a big red salute to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama (@JDMahama) for his decision not to be on the ballot for the 2028 Presidential elections.

I did not expect less because, over the years, I have had the privilege to know him at close range. President Mahama has been a consummate believer in constitutionalism.

He has always held the view that leaders are not divine entities and must always make room for the democratic process to throw up opportunities for as many citizens as possible to serve.

By this decision, President Mahama has made me proud again as his friend and comrade.

May he succeed in resetting Ghana as he promised in his drive to become President of Ghana”, he concluded.

It must be noted that NPP’s Justin Frimpong Kodua started the third term talks when he accused the NDC and John Mahama of plotting to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo to enable President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.

He claimed that the argument revolves around Article 66(2) of the Constitution.

Justin Frimpong Kodua noted that some individuals are allegedly planning to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution in a way that implies the two-term limit applies only to two successive terms.

Also, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has shut down calls from some sections of Ghanaians calling on President John Dramani Mahama to run for a third term.

According to Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC has no plan to present President John Mahama again for the 2028 election.

He emphasised that they have never run the NDC in ways that conflict with the 1992 constitution.

The NDC chairman boldly added that the party will stick by the tenets of the Constitution, which states that a president is only entitled to two terms.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, August 26, Asiedu Nketia detailed, “We have never run our party in ways that conflict with the national constitution, and we don’t intend to do that,” he said. “We will stick by the tenets of the Constitution.”
