NPP drags Owusu Bempah to the National Council following multiple petitions

NewsNPP drags Owusu Bempah to the National Council following multiple petitions

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dragged its Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Owusu Bempah, to the National Council following multiple petitions for his removal.

According to the NPP, Ernest Owusu Bempah has been referred to the National Council, which has the authority to make a final determination.

The NPP leadership expressed grave concern over the conduct of Owusu Bempah, adding that it had officially received petitions calling for his removal from office.

In a statement signed by the NPP’s Justin Kodua Frimpong, it reads, “The leadership of the Party has observed, with grave concern, the conduct of Mr Ernest Owusu Bempah, Deputy Director of Communications.

The Secretariat has further received formal petitions from party members demanding his removal from office. In line with due process, and considering that his appointment was made upon the recommendation of the National Executive Committee and subsequently approved by the National Council, the matter has been formally referred to the National Council for appropriate consideration and determination.

The Party reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding discipline. Safeguarding its values, and ensuring that all matters are handled with fairness and transparency”.

The NPP’s referral comes following Ernest Owusu Bempah, the Deputy Director of Communications for the NPP, who has criticised party members who are targeting the current government over galamsey issues.

Owusu Bempah emphasised that NPP members have no moral right to exploit the matter of galamsey for political gain, as some of them were involved in illegal mining, which hindered the former president Akufo-Addo’s efforts to combat galamsey.

Speaking in a self-recorded video shared on X, Ernest Owusu Bempah stated, “I have seen NPP members who have risen, having the moral audacity to fight galamsey, and have the nerve to criticise John Mahama. I, Owusu Bempah, will not go into that tangent when I speak; people think I am just being controversial, but it is a fact”.

He recounted that in 2012, NPP members organised a demo against Mahama for turning Ghana into a galamsey headquarters, but did the same when they came to office in 2016.

Owusu Bempah added, “We were here in 2012 when we organised demonstrations against John Mahama, claiming he had turned Ghana into a galamsey headquarters. Our own party members used galamsey for politics with the sitting president, Akufo-Addo, putting his presidency on the line.

But allegedly, due to the people around him being part of galamsey activities, some of them came to continue the NDC’s mess.  So what moral right do we have to even come back and today use galamsey to do politics?”

He further highlighted that, “Akufo-Addo was prepared to fight galamsey, but because some people were doing it under his own watch, allegedly, our own government could not fight to achieve the dreams of Akufo-Addo”.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the NPP’s referral of Owusu Bempah, saying, “A few weeks ago, the party said it had granted amnesty to all deserted members. Then it turns around to push out Owusu Brmpah. The fact is clear: the party is against dissenting voices and would do anything to shut you up. This can’t be a party for any well-thinking person!”.

Another netizen wrote, “We know what they are trying to do, but they can’t intimidate anybody. He said worse things when he was campaigning for Bawumia. Was he referring to the National Council Committee? Now he’s supporting Ken, so suddenly there are petitions against him. What about Abronye? Has he been disciplined? We are already Kennected, so they can kick him out and Ken will still win regardless”.

One more netizen added, “He’s simply the easier, more vulnerable target. But honestly, what did he say that Kennedy Agyapong hasn’t said and worse? What about Abronye? Or even Adwoa Sarfo? You guys have carried the same selective justice from gov’t into opposition. An inevitable self-implosion quest”.

Additionally, a netizen added, “If the Party really wants to uphold party discipline, then Abronye should have been suspended rather than organising a demo on his behalf. How could such a character attack everyone and bring the party’s name into disrupute still be maintained in the party? Because of what?”
