The 15 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region who have declared their support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia have dared Dr Bryan Acheampong to publicly name MPS who allegedly contacted him.
Dr Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and a presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had claimed that most of the 15 Members of Parliament who declared support for Bawumia called him afterwards.
He further revealed that he texted Dr Bawumia, warning him to fear delegates.
Dr Acheampong highlighted that in the Eastern region, 20,000 NPP delegates are voting and out of that, only 15 support Bawumia.
Speaking during his campaign run in Achiase in the Eastern Region, Dr Bryan Acheampong stated, “In the Eastern region, 20,000 delegates are voting here. Some days ago, I heard 15 MPs in the Eastern Region declared their support for Bawumia. 20,000 people are voting here, and out of that, 15 are saying they are supporting someone else.
They even organised a press conference about it, and the truth is that after the press conference, they even called me. But I have texted Dr Bawumia to fear the delegates”.
He added, “In the Eastern Region, those 15 people who have declared support for another person, I will win their constituencies one by one. The one who led the press conference, this is his constituency, and I am going to win here as well. Kofi, wherever you are, can you hear your people are saying they will not vote for your man?”
However, the 15 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region have replied to Bryan Acheampong.
According to the MPs, none of the 15 NPP MPs has called to plead with Bryan Acheampong.
Speaking in an interview on CITI News P for Achiasi, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo stated, “None of the 15 NPP MPs has called to plead with him. We’re asking him to provide evidence to show the whole world those who went to him to plead for forgiveness”
“We’re also asking him to give us some evidence. From the investigations we did, there were no such text messages to the former Vice President,” he said.
Also, the 15 MPs, in a statement, also challenged Bryan Acheampong, “We challenge him, in the spirit of truth and accountability, to publicly name the MPs he alleges contacted him. Until then, his claim remains nothing but a fabrication”.
They further accused Bryan Aveampong of trying to project himself as the sole financier of the Eastern Region campaign.
The MPs argued that the money came from party financiers and businessmen who backed Dr Bawumia, with Acheampong only serving as a coordinator.
“What is more troubling is that what eventually reached MPs was less than what had originally been agreed upon, forcing us to dip into our own resources to keep the campaign alive”, they stated.
They further accused Acheampong of falsely telling polling station executives that monies meant for them were diverted by constituency executives and MPs.
The 15 MPs called on the central campaign team of Dr Bawumia’s 2024 bid to disclose exactly how much was handed to Bryan Acheampong for operations in the region and what the funds were earmarked for.
They further reaffirmed their loyalty to Dr Bawumia, “We remain firm, united, and unwavering in our support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Bryan Acheampong’s allegations are calculated to serve his personal agenda. We call on him to retract his false claims immediately.”
Meanwhile, an aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, has refuted claims that MPs endorsing the former vice president are being manipulated.
According to Dr Ekua Amoakoh, the complaints from rivals show they are panicking following the wave of MP endorsements in the Eastern Region.
She emphasised that rivals are creating the impression that the MPs are like clay to be moulded or manipulated.
Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Friday, September 26, Dr Ekua Amoakoh stated, “In any contest, when you hear one side beginning to complain a lot and always make excuses, it just means one thing — that that side is losing.”
“I hate it when we create the impression that people are manipulable or that they are like clay in the hands of people to be moulded. I don’t think the MPs are children or that they can be manipulated to do A or B. For all of them to boldly come forward and speak to their constituents on behalf of His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, I don’t think it’s a small thing.”
“I also see how our opponents will downplay this kind of event. It only means that it really hit them at the core of their campaigns”, she added.
