How Tamale Teaching Hospital boss paid a dead man for 26 months after attending his burial service

NewsHow Tamale Teaching Hospital boss paid a dead man for 26 months after attending his burial service

The management of the Tamale Teaching Hospital has been exposed for validating and paying a dead man for 26 months.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Accra on Monday, September 29, the Tamale Teaching Hospital management was fingered for validating and paying a dead man for 26 months.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of parliament has quizzed the management of Tamale Teaching Hospital over some financial irregularities at the hospital.

Ranking Member Samuel Atta-Mills of PAC quizzed the Tamale Teaching Hospital management on whether they had not attended the deceased staff member’s funeral.

Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee hearing, Samuel Atta-Mills quizzed, “Habib Napare – date of separation was 2022. This guy had died. Didn’t you go to the funeral? And you validated this dead person for 26 months? And now you are coming to tell Parliament to do what?” Atta-Mills asked sharply”.

A management member reacting to the question from the committee revealed they had so far recovered GHS303,558.68 of the total amount.

He revealed that the Hospital had submitted the names of the individuals implicated in the act to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for recovery.

The management member stated, “We have recovered GHS303,558.68. We have followed a total list to EOCO to help us. EOCO has written back demanding their respective files of the person involved. We have submitted that.

Also, Chairman of the committee, Abena Osei Asare, added, “Moving forward, maybe we will ask you to bring the validators along so they speak to it, maybe they saw the person ghost or saw the person somewhere.

That’s how a deceased person will be validated for 26 good months, and then somebody who has worked for more than three months, six months will be running every day to the Controller and Accountant General just to be validated”.

Some Ghanaians reacted to the shocking development, saying, “This issue is repeatedly brought up in every Public Accounts Committee session, yet these Managing Directors continue holding their positions just by issuing apologies. How long will this go on in Ghana?”.

A netizen added, “And there are no consequences. They maintain their post, go back and device new looting scheme to loot. Such a joke of a country”.

“What’s really the essence of these sittings when government officials are not prosecuted for causing financial loss to the state?”, one more X user wrote.

Additionally, a netizen added, “NSS boss last year same story noting was done, NSA boss same story, nothing was done, ECG scandal nothing was done, eii Ghana ebi some people demma own ooo and we just pay tax for living in it. All this, yet when a common Citizen, out of desperation, commit the least of crimes, 20 years”.

One more Ghanaian wrote, “Is about time validation is assigned to various heads of departments rather than letting only one HR personnel do it for all Staff. When one travels and is in an area council like the MMDAs, they will validate for months b4 they know he is not at post. Sake of nono fio, one will do all”.

“These are crimes that people have to be going to prison for? Recovery alone shouldn’t be the answer. What did we sack the chief justice for again?”, a Ghanian wrote.

One more X user added, “You buried him with one hand and kept paying him with the other. 26 months of “ghost” salary… comedy at taxpayers’ expense. A few have turned the nation into a cash cow, so no wonder the country is poor while its people are filthy rich”.

“This country really needs someone of Donald Trump’s calibre. Because if we keep voting for these professors, lawyers, communicators, etc, our country will remain where it is. In a serious country, the committee will order the police to take these guys away”, A Ghanaian on X suggested.

Meanwhile, the Auditor-General’s (A-G) report has also revealed that the hospital paid salaries amounting to GHS 1,449,000 to a deceased staff member for a period of 26 months
