Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Legal practitioner and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, has fired shots at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) over their list of speakers scheduled for the GBA’s 2025 annual conference.
The Majority Chief Whip in a post on X on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, shared a list of speakers scheduled for the GBA’s 2025 annual conference.
He recounted that the Ghana Bar Association from 2017 to 2024 almost always had former President Akufo-Addo as their Special Guest of Honour and Speaker, but in 2025, John Mahama is missing in the list of advertised Speakers.
According to Dafeamekpor, the Ghana Bar Association’s unalloyed bias against JDM and the NDC government is too glaring to be ignored.
Dafeamekpor, in his post, wrote, “I saw how the GBA organised its Annual Conference from 2017-2024 in this country.
The then Prez, Nana Akuffo Addo, was nearly always the Special Guest of Honour & Speaker.
That isn’t the case in 2025. The Prez is conspicuously missing from the list of advertised Speakers at the Confab”.
He further accused the Ghana Bar Association leadership of inviting the President of the Bar Council of England and Wales after they recently attacked the John Mahama-led government.
Dafeamekpor added, “What’s curious is that the GBA leadership has rather decided to invite the President of the Bar Council of England & Wales. A group that recently attacked this Govt without any provocation.
GBA, kindly add the Prez of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association for effect.
Your unalloyed bias against JDM and the NDC Govt is too glaring to be ignored now. You can continue to act as a Wing of the main opposition party to do its bidding, we are ready for you”, he confidently added.
From September 14 to September 19, 2025, the 2025 Ghana Bar Association Annual Conference is scheduled to be held in Wa, Upper West.
Meanwhile, Dafeamekpor’s reference to the President of the Bar Council of England & Wales comes following the UK Bar Council, Commonwealth Lawyers, who have ordered President John Dramani Mahama to immediately and without delay, reinstate the suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
On Thursday, August 14, 2025, in a joint statement, the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association demanded the reinstatement of the Chief Justice.
Parts of their statement noted, “Immediately and without delay, reinstate the Chief Justice of Ghana to her Office, consistent with both the hitherto strong attachment to the rule of law demonstrated by Ghana and also, the constitutional duties incumbent upon them”.
They stated that the rules of practice must “include the time frame within which the investigating committee must conclude the disciplinary process against the Chief Justice, without any further delay and communicate that decision of that process to all concerned in upholding the rule of law in Ghana.”
According to the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, the investigating committee permitting petitioners to use witnesses instead of attending themselves to answer questions on their petitions does not follow the rules and norms of due process.
They argued that the decision by the investigating committee to “deny the Chief Justice’s legal representative the respect required when attending the hearings of the investigating committee is contrary to the Latimer House Principles, which underline the duty to ensure fair and just process.”
However, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has replied to the UK Bar Council, Commonwealth Lawyers.
Dr Dominic Ayine, in a statement, emphasised that the suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s suspension will remain until the inquiry committee completes and submits its report to President Mahama.
